48 Hours at The Principal Madrid

As one of the coolest hotel openings in 2015, we already had certain (high) expectations to The Principal Madrid. The new landmark luxury hotel as the hotel calls itself. In fact the design is dark and due to the membership of design hotels attracting all kind of fashionistas and people from the filming industry. Arriving by elevator on the 6th floor where the reception, restaurant and bar are situated is like stepping into another world. Viewing around the main center of Madrid and Gran Via - where the hotel is perfectly situated by the way - the restaurant and Lobby are therefore flooded with daylight.

In comparison to the public spaces, our room was not yet as bright and light filled, however it was spacious and even had a super-comfy sofa inside. Beside two single beds, a small wardrobe, a writing desk and a luggage bench, there was a designed bathroom with a seperated toilet, single vanity and walk-in shower with massage head. The toiletries were the same as at the Unico - by Gilchrist and Soames. We did sleep very good and could regenerate well from the exhausting days of sightseeing in an extremely hot Madrid! Turn-down service was also available with free bottled water (still) and excellent chocolates. In general we liked our room, but next time we will ask for a room facing the Gran Via or a room on floor 5 - there is much more light even in the courtyard rooms.

Breakfast was very good - although not as big as at the Unico. Bread was good as well and we liked the Pancakes - they were cold. Orange juice was fresh and squeezed, however there is a coffee machine to make your coffe. Staff is just here to take your used plates and fill up the buffet. We also weren't asked if we want to order eggs so I do not know if there is the possibility to get omlettes or eggs. The whole buffet was wonderfully appointed and we did not miss a thing (due to the hot temperatures we were not in mood for eggs anyhow).

The best of the hotel, beside its modern look, is the location. Directly on Gran Via, you can reach all important sights within minutes of walking. The Royal Palace is just a 15 minutes stroll away, which is perfect for all lovers of sightseeing.

All in all The Principal is a modern and truly stylish place to stay in the heart of Madrid. We can recommend this place to lovers of Designhotels and all those appreciating modern interiors. I liked the hotel pretty much, although I was a bit overwhelmed from the dark style at the first moment!

We were guests of The Principal Madrid. All our above written expreses our own opinion.
